Winnie the Pooh

One of the favorite stories my father likes to tell about my childhood relates to Winnie the Pooh. When I was young I loved that silly old bear and watched all of my relevant VHS tapes diligently. My father loves to recall how one of my favorite moments was as the narrator was performing his task, Pooh inquires as to the mysterious voice he’s overhearing. “That,” Tigger proclaims with gusto, “is the narrator!” I collapsed into a fit of giggles every time I viewed this scene, according to my father. For whatever reason he loves to tell it, perhaps because … Continue reading

Winnie the Pooh: Milne vs. Disney

After contemplating the character of Mickey Mouse last month, I started to think about one of my favorite Disney characters: Winnie the Pooh. I realized I didn’t remember reading the original stories by A.A. Milne. Disney purchased the rights to Winnie the Pooh in 1960, so any Pooh I’d ever known belonged to Disney. I wanted to see how he compared to the original. Good news for fans of Disney and Pooh alike: much of what we love about the character is taken from the original stories. Many of the classic adventures of Pooh are lifted directly from A.A. Milne’s … Continue reading

Good news for all you die-hard Winnie-the-Pooh fans: The first official sequel to the original Pooh books will hit store shelves later this year, more than 80 years after the chubby honey-loving bear first appeared in print. According to publishers, “Return to the Hundred Acre Wood,” is a follow up to A.A. Milne’s “Winnie-the-Pooh” and “The House At Pooh Corner.” It will appear in bookstores worldwide October 5th. The new book will be written by David Benedictus, who produced an audio adaptation of Winnie-the-Pooh starring actress Judi Dench. In addition, Mark Burgess, who is known for drawing classic children’s characters … Continue reading

Growing Up with Winnie the Pooh: It’s Playtime with Pooh (2006)

With few children’s characters as immortally beloved as Winnie the Pooh, it’s no wonder that the Disney company has done everything they can to capitalize on his popularity. The television series that came from the original films has definitely been a favorite amongst its preschool viewers, and the video series “Growing Up with Winnie the Pooh” takes those television episodes and combines them to create an hour-long film. “It’s Playtime with Pooh” features four short films that demonstrate the importance of friendship and working together to solve problems. In our first story, the animals experience a series of practical jokes. … Continue reading

Your Winnie the Pooh Birthday Cake

A few days ago, Lauri over in Fun posted some games and fun things to do at a Winnie the Pooh Birthday Party. I’m a little late but here to follow up on some great ideas for your Winnie the Pooh birthday party cake! One of the great things about the Winnie the Pooh theme is that supplies run in abundance at most party stores. (This is really true for most popular children’s characters.) This makes decorating a cinch. Easy Pooh Cake The easiest way to get a Pooh cake is to make and frost a regular 9 x 13 … Continue reading

Planning a Pooh Bear Birthday Party

Being big Winnie the Pooh fans around here, we have thrown several “silly old bear” themed parties. Because there is so much Pooh related stuff out there, it is an easy party to put together. You won’t have any trouble finding Pooh plates, Pooh shaped cake pans, or even Pooh piñatas. All of that stuff is fine, but it’s more fun (and cheaper) to get a little creative. And making your own party stuff gets the children involved. For invitations think about brown honey pot shaped paper, or a red shirt shaped card with the word “Pooh” on the front. … Continue reading

Games to Play at a Pooh Bear Party

Here are some games to play at your Pooh Bear Party! For a fun game, that is harder than it sounds, try to throw “bees” into a honey pot. The bees can be any decent sized candy. We used miniature Hersey candy bars. To make the candy look more like bees, draw black stripes on yellow tissue paper, then wrap a small pieces of the tissue paper around the candy and secure it with a piece of clear tape. To play the game, try to throw the “bees” into the pot. The honey pot can be a punch bowl, or … Continue reading

Poohsticks

Poohsticks is a favorite game we like to play on hikes. As a bonus, it is guaranteed to occupy toddlers for a long, long time. A.A. Milne fans will recognize the game from The House at Pooh Corner. From the middle of a bridge, Pooh Bear drops a fir cone into a slow moving river and is surprised to see it turn it on the other side of the bridge. And if you’ve seen the original Disney Winnie-the-Pooh movies, the Pooh gang plays Poohsticks in Winnie the Pooh and a Day for Eeyore. So why is the game called Poohsticks … Continue reading

Pooh’s Grand Adventure: the Search for Christopher Robin (1997)

Everyone has to grow up sometime, even Christopher Robin. He’s had an innocent and happy childhood, playing with all his friends in the Hundred Acre Wood, but now something else is going to be taking up his time. Yes, it’s time for Christopher Robin to go to school. He spends one last day gallivanting around with Winnie the Pooh, and he tries to tell his bear buddy that he won’t be as available any more, but it’s hard to break the news. When Pooh wakes up the next morning, he finds a honey pot with his name on it, and … Continue reading

The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (1977)

I can think of no more beloved childhood icon than Winnie the Pooh. Based on the 1920s books by A.A. Milne and made even cuter by Walt Disney, children everywhere know and love this adorable, if somewhat vague bear. In “The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh,” the first full length film to feature our bear, we meet the whole complement of animals who live in the Hundred Acre Wood: Eeyore the donkey, Kanga and Roo, a kangaroo and her joey, Rabbit, Piglet, and Owl – but most of all, Winnie the Pooh. They are all stuffed animals belonging to … Continue reading
