Mary Blair’s Disney Legacy

Last year for Women’s History Month I introduced the women of the Pen and Ink Department in the Golden Era of Walt Disney Animation. Today, on the 100th anniversary of Women’s History Day, his year I want to take a look at a woman who stands out in the following generation of Disney work in the 1940s. One of the most notable of these female Disney animation trailblazers is Mary Blair. Inducted into the Disney Legends Hall in 1991, Mary Blair revolutionized the artistry of the Disney Company. Her biography on the Legends website has the scoop on Mary Blair’s … Continue reading

Disney’s The Magic Gourd Designed to Enchant China

China is one tough nut for Disney to crack, but to give the Walt Disney Company credit they have been bound and determined for over a decade now. Yesterday, Disney announced that they would be launching a new strategy in the Asian country designed to entertain and entice the Chinese public. Part of their new strategy includes the upcoming release of the Chinese-language film in cooperation with the China Film Group called The Magic Gourd. The Magic Gourd This film, a first of it’s kind as the Disney Company works in conjunction with the state-run film group is a mix … Continue reading

Ears to the World

The great thing about Disney World is the fun you can have no matter what part of the world you have come from. I remember during one trip to Disney World there was a Japanese tour group that we encountered at different hotels and parks along the way. They were wonderfully social, but they were also charming in how they interacted with all of us. English Is Not Your First Language Despite the Americanization of the parks around the world and the obvious use of English language at the park, English doesn’t have to be your first language when it … Continue reading

In the center of the Tokyo Disneyland is Cinderella’s Castle. The Castle, itself, is located in the center of the park and draw’s the visitor’s eyes. In fact, the castle itself is a symbol of the … Continue reading

Have you ever ventured to the land of the Rising Sun? If you were, you would visit a magnificent country with a rich history and heritage. You would most likely want to visit the temples with their idyllic locales, their ancient gardens and more. Still, despite this rich history, the beauty and the majesty of the land that gave us the Samurai, children don’t always want to see the rice paddies and the ancient temples – what they want to see is that little slice of Americana that is called Tokyo Disneyland. Journey to Japan Most of us in the … Continue reading

The Definitive Disney – Do You Know The Whole Story?

I love biographies. Neil Gabler’s Walt Disney: The Triumph the American Imagination is not small exception. This is not a small book, by any standard – in fact, the book is 633 pages of text and contains more than 200 pages of bibliography, notes and acknowledgements. Walt Disney was born in 1901 and he died in 1966 and over the years there are numerous articles and books that have been written about him. His life and his work continue to inspire generations 4 decades after his death. Gabler’s book captures this legacy and views Disney in a far more complex … Continue reading
