Wall-E Off the Wall and Pleasure Island Reimagined?

In the age of reimaginations (think Get Smart, Transformers and the upcoming Star Trek) is it any surprise that Disney imagineers are re-imagining another feature of the Disney properties? They did it with the Living Seas, transforming it into to the Seas with Nemo & Friends. Pleasure Island Disney is closing the nightclubs on Pleasure Island. Kevin Lansberry, Downtown Disney Vice President, describes their decision as “we are currently considering a number of unique concepts from around the globe as we re-imagine Pleasure Island.” Six clubs will close on September 27 (Mannequins, 8 Trax, BET, Adventurers Club, Motion and Comedy … Continue reading

Wall-E (2008)

Let me begin this review with a very simple, yet profound reaction to Disney/Pixar’s latest venture ‘Wall-E’. Wow. We sat down to watch it early Friday morning, the very first showing. The daughter was settled comfortably between us and the theater was pretty packed by the time the previews began to air. I’ll admit, I had some reservations about Wall-E from the first time I wrote about it right up until the moment the first flicker of film filled the screen. Boy am I happy to say how wrong I got it. The Story Wall-E is a trash compacting robot. … Continue reading

Wall*E Goes Beyond Disney Scope

Wall*E is not going to be a traditional Disney or even Pixar release for that matter. It goes beyond the Disney scope and actually broaches more into the realm of science fiction. According to Andrew Staunton, the creation of Wall*E is based on the question : What if mankind had to evacuate Earth and someone forgot to turn off the last robot? Evolution & Robotics There has been a great deal of literary speculation over the years about the evolution of man and machine. Chief among the speculators was Isaac Asimov in his works that I, Robot was based on. … Continue reading

Wall-E is Coming from Pixar

In the summer of 2008, Disney and Pixar will be bringing us a new character to add to our collection of beloved favorites. From the creators of Woody and Buzz (Toy Story), Mike and Sully (Monsters Inc.) Dory and Nemo (Finding Nemo) and so many more – the next big Disney Pixar project is about a sad little robot named Wall-E. The movie is scheduled for release June 27, 2008 (give or take a day) and tells the story of a little garbage robot who works on a sad, lonely planet packaging up garbage day after day. But after 700 … Continue reading

Disney World to Build “Avatar” Park

News broke last month of a new theme park addition to Disney World. It comes in the form of a property that, upon first glance, one might almost mistake for a Disney/Pixar feature. It stars fuzzy blue cat-like people with big luminous eyes, and studies the interaction the denizens of this new world have with the humans who discover them. That previous sentence summary might almost pass as a Disney movie, but 2009’s “Avatar” was anything but. It was a darker story, one along the lines of “The Last of the Mohicans.” But it was a smash hit, so now … Continue reading

Miyazaki: Master of Animation, Pt. 2

“Each cell of (Miyazaki’s) movies is a painting you’d want to hang on the wall.” –Kathleen Kennedy, Executive Producer, “Ponyo” English language version Today I’ll conclude my look at Miyazaki’s films, and consider what makes him such a great animator. Whisper of the Heart (1995; adapted by Miyazaki). Based on a comic by Aoi Hiragi, “Whisper of the Heart” is unique for Miyazaki in that it’s set in modern-day Tokyo and is not a fantasy. This is another coming of age story with some Germanic influences and a gorgeous violin soundtrack. It follows teens Shizuku and Seiji as they determine … Continue reading

Pushing “Up” into New Territory

On Tuesday, November 10th, Disney released “Up” on DVD, and I eagerly rushed to the store to add Pixar’s latest triumph to my collection. Each year I find myself blown away by the studio’s offerings, especially their original storytelling, sharp writing, and gorgeous graphics. “Up” holds a special place in my heart and mind, however, for its groundbreaking take on an important issue. One of the struggles facing modern families today is how to raise tolerant, discerning children. It can be difficult teaching children to overcome stereotypes. If all the heroes and leading characters they see on screen are young, … Continue reading

Ratatouille (2007)

Let me preface this review by saying that although this movie is gorgeously done animation by director and writer Brad Bird (The Incredibles 2004), this fairytale about a Remy the Rat’s dreams of being a master chef coming true does have one significant problem for parents. The animation is so well done that the scenes of the rats fleeing one home at the beginning or swarming together to help Remy towards the end are so very well done that it was nauseating. It was like actually watching a tidal wave of rats and I’m sorry Disney and Pixar – you … Continue reading

The Incredibles – Part Deux?

Oh, say it’s true, please please! Because of all the animated features out there that could be a blast with a sequel — Brad Bird’s The Incredibles is one I would love to see. You may remember the 2004 Disney Pixar film that featured the Parr family: Bob, Helen, Violet, Dash and Baby Jack Jack. But the Parr family has a secret – Bob and Helen are former super heroes forced to give up their Super Identities and live like everyone else after lawsuits and public sentiment turn against them. According to Brad Bird, he is still working on coming … Continue reading
