Toy Story Mania Opening!by Heather Long | More from this Blogger 30 May 2008 03:43 AM Toy Story Mania is now open at Disney's Hollywood Studios and will open at Disney's California Adventure in June (June 17). The park's Imagineers have been tweaking the attraction after visits from Disney Vacation Club members and members of the press. What's the vote on the new attraction? Pretty positive if you follow the press reviews. The official grand opening is May 31st. Yep, tomorrow! So if you're in Florida or planning a trip this week or this summer, be sure to check it out. The actual name, by the way, is Toy Story Midway Mania, but it doesn't trip off the tongue the way Toy Story Mania does. What to Expect? The ride is completely interactive and is inspired by the Disney Pixar films. The world is 4-D with midway type games hosted by favored Toy Story characters including Buzz, Jessie, Woody, Hamm and more. You use virtual spring action shooters to throw virtual projectiles at the targets. Each game has a hidden "Easter Egg" that launches more rounds of fun. Each vehicle in the rides seats 4 back to back pairs. You wear 3-D glasses and you spin as you ride. Mini-games
The attraction sounds like terrific fun. The queue to get into the attraction will have an animatronic Mr. Potato Head with pre-recorded snippets of dialogue by Don Rickles (he voiced the character in the films). Get to the park early (as in, as soon as it opens) and grab a FastPass, then get in line and go on the ride. Fast Passes will probably be gone in the first hour. The ride itself is a lot of fun, but it's not worth the hour-long wait you'll have to endure to get in if you don't have a Fast Pass and are there at some other time than the opening half-hour. It's a lot like the Buzz Lightyear ride at Disney World, but with 3D glasses doing simulated shooting instead of lasers. The main advantage is that you can tell whether it was you hitting the target rather than somebody else, and the games are more varied.
