The Worst Genealogy Blog of the Year

Many genealogists take time out of their research to work on their very own, personal, genealogy blog. While some of these blogs are entertaining, informative, and inspirational, others are a chore to try and read. Here are some tips to keep your blog from being deemed “the worst genealogy blog of the year”. Anyone can make a blog. There are several websites that will let you sign up and instantly start creating a blog about whatever topic you like for free. This is both good and bad. It allows every genealogist who desires to make a family history blog the … Continue reading

How to Avoid Becoming a Pirate

Perhaps you have discovered that one of your ancestors was, in fact, a pirate. He “sailed the seven seas”, and you discovered him while surfing the internet. Genealogists need to be very careful that they do not accidentally become a pirate themselves. Be wary of what you choose to post online! The word “pirate” has more than one definition. One brings to mind images of ships with great big sails, the Jolly Roger flag, and perhaps some of the scenes from Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies. The more modern meaning of pirate often refers to the illegal practice of … Continue reading

Jake and the Never Land Pirates

Jake and the Never Land Pirates first aired this past February. Quickly it became the #1 preschool show for and the most co-viewed series on the network. You have to love a show that 45% of moms are watching alongside their children. You can count me in as one of those 45% of moms. When the show first came out I was disappointed it was not around when my son was still watching Disney Junior. Both of my older children loved the Disney Junior shows when they were of preschool age. Now my younger two watch some of the Disney … Continue reading

Pirate Adventure

My 6-year-old daughter recently attended a birthday party with a “Jake and the Never Land Pirates” theme. The animated show on Disney Junior is based on Peter Pan, but is much cuter and tamer than the original pirate/fairy movie. My daughter happens to love the show, but is not a huge pirate fan. Rather, she adores Tick-Tock the Crocodile and Skully the bird. Given her affinity for animals instead of buccaneers, I wondered how she’d do at the pirate fest. Turns out she had a blast, thanks in large part to the birthday boy’s mother’s creativity. Here are just a … Continue reading

Hawaiian Location for Fourth “Pirates” Film

My second and final Hawaii week installment has Disney promising a swashbuckling adventure in Hawaii’s tropical paradise. Executives at Disney have announced that the fourth “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie will be filmed in Hawaii. “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” will begin filming this summer on Oahu and Kauai. It’s slated for release in 2011, likely in the summer. Few details are known yet for “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.” The movie is a confirmed adaptation, in places, of the 1988 historical fantasy novel “On Stranger Tides” by Tim Powers. The main plot point in the … Continue reading

Pirates Attack French Navy

You have probably read the stupid criminal stories before. You know, like the bank robber that writes his hold up note on his deposit slip that contains all of his personal information. Today, I read an international stupid criminal headline on Yahoo…”Somali pirates attack French military flagship.” If you’ve been reading the news lately, you know that pirate attacks are on the rise, particularly off the coast of Somalia. We are not talking charming Jack Sparrow pirates, but honest to God modern day pirates. I really shouldn’t make fun of these pirates. I am sure their piracy is just an … Continue reading

Guide to Pirate Parenting – Tim Bete

When I first picked up “Cap’n Billy ‘The Butcher’ MacDougall’s Guide to Pirate Parenting,” I really had no idea what to expect. I thought perhaps it would be a book that compared raising children to training pirates, and that through the allegories, we would be taught new and vital information we need in order to be successful parents. What I actually got was a book that literally tells you how to raise your children to be pirates, and it’s absolutely hysterical. It’s a spoof on all the other parenting books out there, and makes you step back and realize that … Continue reading

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (2007)

I’m so confused. I thought I was confused after the first Pirates when we thought Bootstrap Bill was dead, but he couldn’t be dead, because he would have to be undead, right? But then in “Dead Man’s Chest” we learn that he’s slowly turning into a barnacle on the Flying Dutchman. Whatever. If there’s one thing I’ve learned about the Pirates series, it’s to enjoy the films for what they are and to try not to analyze them too much, because they really don’t make a whole lot of sense. At the end of “Dead Man’s Chest,” we saw Elizabeth … Continue reading

Pirates of the Caribbean: the Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)

As is frequently the case, the first movie is the best. “Pirates of the Caribbean: the Curse of the Black Pearl” is the movie that started a whole pirate craze, and for good reason – this movie is funny, romantic, adventurous, and just a little scary. When Elizabeth Swann was just a young girl, she and her father were out on a ship and came upon another vessel that had been destroyed by pirates. They rescued a young boy named Will from that wreck and helped him apprentice with a blacksmith in town. Years have gone by, and Elizabeth (Keira … Continue reading

Frugal Pirate Party Favor

Guess what I am doing right now? Okay, besides typing this up to you of course. In between sentences, I am doing something else. I’ll give you a hint. My son’s birthday party is this Saturday. Okay, so I know that I blew the surprise in the title of the blog. But humor me. I’ve been going crazy trying to plan out a wonderful kid’s pirate party for as little money as possible. These kids parties can get expensive, can’t they? You may remember an earlier article entitled Frugal Kids Parties: Ways to Save. Using some of those techniques have … Continue reading
