Closed for Renovations

The Haunted Mansion is closed – not for good thankfully, but it is closed for the next three months to undergo its first major overhaul. Visitors heading to Disney World this summer will likely be disappointed because the Haunted Mansion remains one of the most popular attractions because of both its humor and it’s special effects. The overhaul should be complete about mid-September. If you’re wondering why couldn’t they wait for the off-season to close the ride? Well, according to the numbers, off-season is seeing almost as many visitors as the summer season – so the decision was made to … Continue reading

Switching Off – A Parent’s Guide to Riding at Disney Parks

Do you know what switching off is? This is a great thing to be aware of before you go to the Disney amusement parks, especially those of you with young children who may or may not be up for a ride on Space Mountain. Switching off is supported by many of the larger rides and attractions at Disney and this is how it works: Want to Ride Space Mountain? Do you want to take your older kids on Space Mountain, but the younger pair isn’t up for the ride? Tell the first Disney attendant that you want to switch off. … Continue reading

Tinker Bell – There’s Something About Her

For a century and then some, Tinker Bell has charmed generations of children – myself included. My daughter is a huge Tinker Bell fan and has wall stickers dancing around her room depicting Tinker Bell in various cute poses wearing a hip length, lime green dress and slippers. From her first appearance in J.M. Barrie’s play and novel Peter Pan, she’s given us a reason to believe. In the novel, she is described as a very common pixie who mends pots and pans. Her behavior ranges from charming and enchanting to spoiled and irritable. She is described as someone too … Continue reading

Disney Reconsiders Releasing “Song of the South” on DVD

Have you ever seen Disney‘s “Song of the South”? I haven’t and unless you’re a lot older than I am you likely haven’t either. However, you’ve probably heard of tales of Br’er Rabbit and gang, as well as heard the famous song “Zip a Dee Doo Dah”. If you’ve been to the Magic Kingdom theme park, the ride Splash Mountain is based on these stories. Disney had chosen not to release the movie because of its portrayal of southern black plantation workers. To offer a brief synopsis (gleaned from my own readings of Uncle Remus’ tales and other online summaries … Continue reading

A Quick Clue as to the Intensity Value on a Disney Ride

I must confess that when it comes to fairground rides, I’m a complete wimp. I have no idea why people seem to think it’s fun to go spinning upside down in some gravity defying position whilst being held “safe” with a few bits of plastic. Nor do I understand the need to get off, throw up, and then get back on to go around again. I do however appreciate that many people get a lot of joy from this kind of activity. It was therefore with some trepidation that I first approached the Disney rides, even the ones that had … Continue reading

P is for Pirate!

Yesterday was apparently International Talk Like a Pirate Day. Unfortunately I didn’t run around saying argh and avast ye matey or whatever else it is that pirates are infamous for saying. My favorite pirate, Captain Hook, was more likely to respond to a Tick Tock than he was to ahoy matey! Disney announced yesterday that they were planning the DVD release for the Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest for December 5th just in time for Christmas. This film has been breaking records since it’s release including the highest theatrical opening weekend in U.S. box office history and becoming … Continue reading

Epcot Explores Possibilities with Kim Possible

This is a neat little story that I found and since I’ve always wondered about the process of creating a new attraction or a new game in Disney World, I’m excited to share this information with you. Researchers from Disney’s Imagineering research and development department are selecting visitors to Epcot to use specially programmed cell phones and directing them to specific places in the park where special effects will activate. The latest generation of hand-held, interactive technologies are allowing the researchers to use video, text and audio messages via these specialized cell phones along with their global-positioning chips. What is … Continue reading

New Members of the Billionaire Boys Club: Jack Sparrow & Will Turner

Last Friday, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest crossed the 1 billion dollar mark at the global box office and is the third film in history to cross that finish line following in such great footsteps as Titanic and Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Disney is justifiably proud of their accomplishment since the film has been breaking records all over the world including holding the current #1 film spot for 2006 in the U.S. box office along with the #1 in the international box office. The Dead Man’s Chest opened in Italy yesterday and the … Continue reading
