Disney Pixar’s Up Soars High but with a Couple of Bumps

Disney Pixar’s Up, now playing in theaters, may be the best movie of the year so far. Still, that doesn’t mean that there isn’t some room for improvement. Up is a wonderful tale that thrills in parts but has a few moments that could have been left out. Up is at once a perfectly bittersweet love story, a realized childhood action adventure, and a classic comedy in which grumpy old man meets an enthusiastically cute and innocent Dennis the Menace archetype. The animation is just amazing. But before Carl Frederickson can become the grouchy retired balloon salesman, he is first … Continue reading

Meet a Families.com Blogger – Lisa Pietsch!

As the former Community Manager, Lisa was the first person I met when I became acquainted with Families.com, and has become a good friend. Lisa, how fun to interview you today! How long have you blogged for Families.com? I’ve been with Families.com since September 26th, 2005. I believe we had about twenty-six members back then. When management announced they would be hiring bloggers, I applied for the topics of Food, Weight Loss and Disney. When they launched the blogs here in early December 2005, they hired me for all three topics as well as the position of Community Manager. Eventually, … Continue reading

Disney News: The Spaceship Earth & A Green Disney

Disney World needs to clean up its act, or at least that’s what the Center for Health, Environment and Justice believes. They have launched a campaign to persuade Disney to change the type of cleaning products they use. The goal of the campaign is to encourage Disney to use their mega-watt image as a tourism industry leader and make them an environmentally responsible one. Certified Green Cleaning Products Disney uses non-toxic cleaners at the Animal Kingdom in order to protect the animals, but they do not use similar products at the rest of their parks. Disney believes that all their … Continue reading

Living Next Door to Disney

From where I stand thousands of miles away, it sounds wonderful to be able to live next door to Disney. If I go to Disney World, I’m looking at organizing transatlantic flights, hotels, restaurants and all the other associated tourist costs. To be able to visit Disney World without all that additional expense sounds like a dream come true. Imagine being able to buy discounted annual pass and be able to take the kids to any of the Disney parks whenever you felt like it. Could there ever be a day when there wasn’t something to do with the kids … Continue reading

Disney in my Stitching Stash!

Over the weekend I was inspired to start thinking about picking up my cross-stitching. It’s been a long time since I picked up a needle and some floss. Way too long! I remember a time when I could stitch 5-8 greeting cards in a weekend. Or I could take a big cross-stitch project and really get my teeth into – sometimes sitting for 5 hours without a break, just completely immersed in the creativity and relaxation of the activity. Then came an interruption. Actually an interruption is what I thought it would be. The reality was that my stitching activity … Continue reading

Disney Introduction to the Magic of Camelot

A few days ago I read a movie review here at families.com that brought a memory back from this summer. Being a twin-culture family, we live in one country but spend our summers in the other so that our boys get to experience both of their cultural roots. We live in Sweden but every July we spend a month in the UK at my mom’s holiday trailer on the Northumbrian coastline (North East corner of England). Some friends knew we were coming last year, and left a pile of Disney videos at the trailer ready for the boys to watch … Continue reading

My Disney Movie Top 5

As a prelude to a set of articles next week on Disney at the Oscars I thought I’d do a top 5 list of my all time favorites. These are in no particular order, but they’re the ones I love to watch over and over again. The Lion King – the opening music to this movie, and the whole “Circle of Life” sequence set the scene and bring me out in goose bumps. The characters are captivating, and even the evil Scar has such a droll attitude that he makes me laugh! This movie is an emotional roller coaster and … Continue reading

Princess or Pirate? It’s Time for a Little Disney Halloween Magic

That we’re not even into September and already Halloween candy, decorations and costumes are making their way into the stores is a little disturbing. However, last year at this time, we were planning our October anniversary vacation to Disney World. Of all the times of year to visit Disney World, October is one of my all time favorites. Why, are you asking? Simply put – it’s one of the most magical places on Earth to spend Halloween. Throughout the month of October, the Magic Kingdom and other parks. Costumes are a large part of it as you get to visit … Continue reading

My Disney Passion

Good morning, I wanted to take a few minutes to introduce myself here as it’s the first time I’ve gotten to write for the Disney (Unofficial) blog and though I am a lifelong fan and I’ve visited Disneyland and Disney World several times, I’ve rarely gotten the opportunity to share my passion for all things Disney outside the family. Disney Through the Years My first Disney World visit occurred at the age of 1, though I do not remember it, my love for all things Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck seems to have always been a part of my life. … Continue reading

The Two Bambi’s

“Bambi, A Life in the Woods” was published by Austrian Felix Salten in 1923. It topped bestseller lists in Europe and received an English translation five years later. In 1933 MGM studios purchased the film rights to the book, hoping to make a live-action version. They decided that the logistics for such a production were insurmountable, however, so they sold the rights to Walt Disney in 1937. Disney loved the book. He was excited to make his first adaptation of a recent work, and had plans to turn the novel into his second feature length animated film. However, he realized … Continue reading
