Parents of Preschoolers Upset About Dora the Explorer

Although we limit television viewing in our household, I have to admit that there are some shows that make all of our lives easier. For example, if I have a sick preschooler or if I need to keep everyone out of the kitchen for 30 minutes they can do the trick (yes, I feel guilty enough already). Some of the shows that meet our approval include Blues Clues, Sesame Street, Cyber Chase, Between the Lions and Dora the Explorer. My kids have learned some things from watching the shows, and they enjoy them as well. I don’t know if you … Continue reading

Gypsy (1962) (1993)

“Gypsy” is a Sondheim musical based on the true life story of Gypsy Rose Lee, the most famous stripper in our history. This may seem like a strange movie for me to review, but let me explain why I found it worth discussing. Two versions of the film were done, one in 1962 and starring Natalie Wood and Rosalind Russell, the other made in 1993 and starring Bette Midler and Cynthia Gibb. I’ve seen them both, the Bette Midler version just last night. This review will encompass both films. Madame Rose has two daughters, one named Louise and the other, … Continue reading

High School Musical Board Game for only $5.99

Once in awhile there’s a movie that the whole family really enjoys, from my young-for-her-age 11 year old to my 40-something “particular” husband. With a family that appreciates music, Disney’s High School Musical is one such movie. We recorded it on the TiVO and it’s been replayed several times. No, the plot isn’t very deep, but there’s something about Zac Efron that’s just so likeable! I predict he’s going to end up a huge star for years to come. If your family likes the movie as much as ours does, you might be interested in the High School Musical Board … Continue reading

The Disney Blog Week in Review May 6 – May 12

We’re planning our next vacation to Disney World and as we ramp up our plans, I’ll be exploring more touring options, hotel stays and restaurant planning for your next stay at Disney World. But let’s take a quick look at our week in review in case you missed any articles for this second week in May. Sunday, May 6 Tokyo Disneyland Attractions (What’s Unique to the Japanese Park?) Disney offers a wonderful repertoire of attractions, but Tokyo has three specific attractions that you can’t find at the other Disney parks. Monday, May 7 New Jersey Comcast viewers were upset when … Continue reading

High School Musical 2 is Coming

Do you remember Troy and Gabriella? Their first encounter startled them both as they shared a tune and a great moment at a ski lodge over Christmas. High School Musical was a somewhat sappy, but altogether entertaining film featured on the Disney Channel. They later released the movie on DVD and the sales declared its popularity. High School Musical has also traveled the country as a concert tour and an ice show. Soundtracks fly off the shelves. We own a copy of it here and my daughter loves it. Disney is better on the popularity of the first to attract … Continue reading

Quincy Jones: A Musical Genius

Born March 14, 1933, on Chicago’s South Side, his family moved to a suburb of Seattle when he was ten years of age. Quincy Delight Jones, Jr’s love affair with musical expression began when he was in elementary school, and his choice to play the trumpet evolved only after he had tried every single instrument available to him in high school band. While barely in his teens, he befriended a local singer-pianist who was a bit older. His name was Ray Charles. The two worked together, forming a combo and performing at small clubs and local weddings. Known as “Q” … Continue reading

Tips for Senior Shots

The marquee in front of our local portrait studio reads: “Last call for senior shots!” Where did the summer go? If your child is entering his senior year in high school, then formal portraits are just one more thing you likely have on your to-do list… or more accurately, your to-pay-for list. Senior portraits aren’t cheap. What’s more, they are a necessity, as they appear in the school’s yearbook, and mark a major milestone in your student’s academic career. So how can you ensure that you are getting your money’s worth? Here are some tips to share with your incoming … Continue reading

Disney’s Project Green

This Thursday, April 22, is the fortieth anniversary of Earth Day. In honor of that I’m making it Earth Week on the Disney blog, and I’m going to explore ways in which the Walt Disney Corporation contributes to ecological causes. Now that green is hip and mega global conglomerates like Disney are getting in on the environmental action, I start to wonder if the trendiness of green initiatives doesn’t sometimes overshadow or outweigh actual conservation efforts. Take Disney’s Project Green, for example. The House of Mouse throws together a splashy website, herds Joe Jonas and Demi Lovato out of the … Continue reading

Get Your Wiggle on at Six Flags

My preschool daughter has never been a huge Wiggles fan. What’s more, she screams like a banchee every time I try to put her on an amusement park ride. And I’m not talking about those baby roller coasters that travel on a flat track, or those crazy toddler swings that spin around with modified reckless abandon. For the past three years my child has unleashed glass shattering, ear splitting, high-pitched shrieks each time I’ve tried to place her on merry-go-round horses (the paralyzed ones that don’t move up and down), baby boats (that barely move in a pool no bigger … Continue reading

Would You Allow Your Child to Wear a Purity Ring?

The Jonas Brothers wear them. So do some of the teens from “High School Musical.” Heck, there was even a point when Britney Spears sported one (what a joke). I’m referring to those mega-popular purity rings. The small silver rings are worn by young people to signify their commitment to abstinence. In other words the ring is supposed to help kids say, “I don’t,” before they say “I do.” The rings are part of an Evangelical Christian movement to encourage teens to make a “pledge of chastity.” According to my research, a father, who was outraged to discover that his … Continue reading
