The cycle is complete: “Pirates of the Caribbean” was a movie based on a classic Disney World ride.  Now there’s a new Disney World attraction based on the movie that was based on the ride.  The Legend of Captain Jack Sparrow is a new immersive walk-through at Disney World that opened on December 6.  The Disney Parks released a behind-the-scenes video with the Imagineers detailing the attraction, and the famous talent that helped bring it to life. The centerpiece of the attraction is the virtual image projected onto the deck of a pirate’s ship: that of Captain Jack Sparrow.  But … Continue reading

“Boy Meets World” Sequel to Air on Disney Channel

Heads up, children of the 90s: according to Entertainment Weekly, the Disney Channel is planning a “Boy Meets World” sequel. The teen sitcom, which aired in the 1990s as part of ABC’S “TGIF” Friday night lineup, starred Ben Savage as Cory Matthews, a kid growing up in suburban Philadelphia. I was a kid growing up in suburban Philadelphia, just a bit younger than Cory. Of all the childhood shows that had a strong influence on my development, “Boy Meets World” wasn’t one of them. But it’s a show that I enjoyed and watched faithfully from beginning to end, so the … Continue reading

World’s Most Polluted Beaches 2

Not long ago, I blogged about polluted beaches. Oceans are one of nature’s great wonders, yet man has destroyed them and in doing that, destroyed the beaches as well. Dreaming of a vacation to beautiful Bali? You might want to avoid the Seminyak Beach. How is it polluted? Let me count the ways…agricultural run-off, sewage, urban waste, and industrial waste. Repulse Beach in Hong Kong has been nicknamed Repulsive Bay and that’s not a good thing. In the past, the beach has an E. coli counts of over 400 count/100 mL. A pipe drains construction pollution into the water. As … Continue reading

The Day the World Stood Still

I still remember vividly the day those towers fell. I was only 12, but I remember that feeling of fear that filled my parent’s faces as they heard the news as the first plane hit. I heard them question each other wondering if it might have been an accident, until 17 minutes later the second tower was hit. We were on our way to school. Every television was on, as we watched the attack that day. As children we feared what this would mean for us. We could hardly comprehend what was happening. Now looking back 11 years later we … Continue reading

World Humanitarian Day

Today was World Humanitarian Day. August 19th was designated as World Humanitarian Day by the United Nations (U.N.). It is a day to remember humanitarians all over the world who have lost their lives while working for humanitarian causes. Think of it as Memorial Day for humanitarians. Why August 19th? Because it was on August 19, 2003 when U.N. Special Representative in Iraq Sergio Vieira de Mello from Brazil and twenty-one others were killed in the bombing of the U.N. Headquarters in Baghdad. Vieira de Mello dedicated over thirty years of his life to humanitarian causes. As a celebration of … Continue reading

Exploring The Secret World of Arrietty

Studio Ghibli’s latest animated feature, “The Secret World of Arrietty,” was released in American theaters by Disney earlier this year and on DVD/Blu-Ray on May 22. Now that I’ve bought and seen it, I can review this latest Japanese masterpiece brought to us by Disney. Well, no matter how much I love Ghibli’s work I think masterpiece might be pushing it a little far. However, “Arrietty” is a fun movie for all ages and definitely deserves a view by any fans of Miyazaki’s work. The renowned animator didn’t direct the film but he did write the screenplay, based on the … Continue reading

Enjoying the Teen Years

The past couple of weeks my husband and I have been enjoying a video series at our church, “Running the Rapids” by Dr. Kevin Leman. It is about guiding teenagers through the turbulent waters of adolescence, comparing river rafting to parenting. It is very lighthearted, informational and inspiring. I am one of those moms who can easily admit that I need all the help I can get. One of the things he said early on in the video series was that the teenage years can be the best. Isn’t it more often that we look upon these years with dread? … Continue reading

77 Years

My son is at his father’s for the night. Trying to pass the time I came across an article about an Italian couple who is set to become the world’s oldest divorcees. The 99 year old man is divorcing his wife of 77 years over an affair that happened during the 1940s. While rummaging through their chest of drawers he found old love letters and confronted his 96 year old wife about them. She confessed to the affair and they are now seeking a divorce. Their five children are grown and have children of their own. I am not one … Continue reading
