Disney Resort to Open in Hawaii

Because it’s a cold February for most of us (it’s currently snowing outside my window), I’ve decided to name this Hawaii week at the families.com Disney blog. Today and Friday I’ll post articles about what Disney’s got going on in Hawaii, and those of us freezing elsewhere in the country can squeeze our eyes shut and pretend we’re somewhere sunny and warm. First up is Disney’s announcement that in Fall 2011 they will open a resort on the Hawaiian island of Oahu. The resort’s full name is Aulani, a Disney Resort and Spa, Ko Olina, Hawaii. According to Disney officials … Continue reading

Disney Vacation Club

The Disney Vacation Club is an interesting twist on the traditional time-share plan. With the Disney Vacation Club, you do make a large initial purchase and then pay annual fees but you get more than the same week every year in Orlando – that is, if you want it. The one-time purchase prices begin at $16,640 (plus closing costs and annual dues). For that purchase price, you receive annual points toward your vacation. You can save your points or use them every year. The point system is what allows the Disney Vacation Club its flexibility. Each of the Disney Vacation … Continue reading

Boating and Water Sports at the Polynesian Resort

One of the first things that struck me about the Polynesian Resort at Walt Disney World was the marina and the amazing variety of watercraft available for rent by resort guests. Deciding whether to stay at the Polynesian Resort and play on the lake all day or to visit one of the Walt Disney World amusement parks is a terrible position to be in. Do yourself a favor and plan to stay an extra day and just play on the water! The marina at the Polynesian Resort has a fleet of both motorized and non-motorized watercraft for rent. You can … Continue reading

Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort

This resort was designed with Coronado’s view of colonial Mexico and the American southwest in mind. You are greeted by a sunny plaza leading to the large lobby complete with beamed, mosaic ceilings, columns, inlaid floors and a beautiful fountain. The resort has three themed areas that are situated around Lago Dorado (Lake Dorado). This resort is located near the Animal Kingdom and Blizzard Beach parks. There are 1,921 guest rooms at the Coronado Springs resort. The three themed areas are Ranchos, Cabanas, and Casitas. Ranchos is located along a dry streambed and has buildings that resemble cattle ranches. This … Continue reading

Disney’s Old Key West Resort

Key West is a beautiful place. The pastel colored cottages, white picket fences and tree lined roads are nothing less than quaint perfection. If you were hoping for a laid back vacation in Key West but the kids wanted to go to Disney World, this is the perfect compromise. Disney’s Old Key West Resort will provide you with a quiet, relaxed atmosphere in which to vacation and still provide the excitement the kids crave. Old Key West is a 156 acre resort complex with tin roofed and white picket fenced two and three story buildings set on tree-lined, winding roads … Continue reading

Disney’s Contemporary Resort

I’ve always loved this resort. The image of this massive, concrete A-frame building with a monorail going through the middle of it was the epitome of modern when I was a kid. This 15 story 1,041 room monstrosity is in the Magic Kingdom Resort Area and is bordered by Bay Lake. Its rooms have fantastic views of the Magic Kingdom and nightly fireworks from Cinderella’s Castle. Standard rooms at the Contemporary offer guests two queen sized or one king sized bed and a daybed, table and chairs, ceiling fan, data-port, in room safe and voicemail. Many of the rooms here … Continue reading

Disney’s Yacht Club Resort

The Yacht Club is on 25-acre Crescent Lake. Like the Beach Club, it was designed by Robert A. M. Stern and meant to bring to mind the New England shore of the 1880s. Also a five-story deluxe resort, the Yacht Club has a gray clapboard facade with whitewashed-wood trim. A nautical theme is carried throughout the resort with brass, millwork and hardwood floors. This resort even comes complete with a lighthouse to guide you home from the parks every night! There are 621 rooms at the Yacht Club and each measures 380 square feet. These rooms are made to comfortably … Continue reading

Disney’s Beach Club Villas

Like the Beach Club resort, the Beach Club Villas at Walt Disney World in Florida were also designed by Robert A.M. Stern and their theme is in keeping with the rest of the Beach Club. If you’ve ever wanted to vacation in a seaside cottage, this is the place for you! Although the Villas are a part of the Disney Vacation Club, you can still stay here during your vacation even if you don’t own shares. There are 205 villas and their combinations of accommodations can make any family comfortable. In fact, these are great places to stay if you … Continue reading

Disney’s Beach Club Resort

Having grown up in New England, the Disney Beach Club at Walt Disney World in Florida brings back memories of the grand old hotels on the coast of Maine. This is one of Walt Disney World’s Deluxe resorts. It lies just west of Epcot around a 25-acre lake and was designed by architect Robert A. M. Stern. The resort stands five stories high, has authentic clapboard siding painted blue with a whitewashed wood trim. Visitors will find a croquet court and beachside cabanas on something they’ll never see in New England, the white sand beach. Employees (Disney cast members) wear … Continue reading
