Roy E. Disney Dies, Aged 79

On December 16, 2009 Roy Edward Disney, a powerful and fundamental force in the Disney company, succumbed to his year-long battle with cancer. Though his face bore a strong resemblance to his famous uncle Walt, Roy’s continuance of Walt Disney’s legacy involved far more than looks. The son of Walt’s brother Roy O., who co-founded the entertainment company with Walt in 1923, Roy didn’t join the family business right away. After attending Pomona College and then Harvard University, Roy first became a film editor on the television show “Dragnet” in 1952. Before long Roy did follow in his family’s footsteps … Continue reading

The Disney Blog Week in Review July 2 – July 6

This was a busy week for many of us in the United States with the 4th of July landing squarely in the middle of the week. It was busy at Disney World and other Disney parks as they celebrated the 4th of July in a very Mickey fashion. It’s also a week where we saw the announcement of the vault opening to release the Jungle Book once more. So let’s take a look at our week in review. Monday, July 2 Disney & The Fractured Fairytale took a look at the upcoming Disney release: Enchanted. Enchanted will combine live action … Continue reading

Disney & The Fractured Fairy Tale

Disney’s planning to do something different this November with the release of Enchanted. They are hoping that their fractured fairytale will reinvigorate their animation departments and start a whole new franchise. In Enchanted Manhattan is the kingdom, a divorce lawyer is their prince and apparently pigeons and roaches will play the part of the forest creatures. The idea behind Enchanted is that it will poke fun at the Disney classics like Snow White and Cinderella. The film is considered a huge risk for the Disney franchise (not so much when you consider Ratatouille and Shrek), but then people view Disney … Continue reading

You’ve Got to Tell Her (Or Him) That You Love Her (Or Him)

This afternoon I finally had the chance to see Enchanted. Part of me had wanted to see it when it came out last summer, but I wasn’t sure I’d like it and didn’t want to risk dragging Wayne to it. But then I caught some of the songs that were performed during the Oscars, and I also watched part of it on the flight home from my mom’s house (on someone else’s seatback screen a few aisle in front of me). It looked pretty cute so I Netflixed it and ended up liking it. (So did Wayne, who watched with … Continue reading

Examining the Cinderella Effect

Our across the street neighbor’s little two-year old girl is nuts for Cinderella. We had Christmas dinner with them and Rebekah was simply ecstatic over the “LaLa” (her word for Cinderella or similar characters) that Santa had brought her. Her enthusiasm reminded me that of all the Disney Princesses, Cinderella always ranked as my favorite too. (At least when I was small. I’d have to say Belle’s probably bumped her way to the number one spot now.) But hands down Cinderella was the one who started it all. Like many little girls, my first notions of love at first sight … Continue reading
