FASTPASS to Meet Mickey Mouse

If you head down to Disney World during tourist season, you’re bound to spend a significant portion of your vacation waiting in lines. In recognition of this problem Disney has introduced a couple different solutions: queue-less waiting systems currently being tested at the Hollywood Studios and soon to come to the Magic Kingdom with the Fantasyland expansion, and the more pervasive FASTPASS. Introduced in 1999, the FASTPASS system allows Disney guests who pay a little extra to skip the line for rides. FASTPASS holders are given a designated time at which to arrive at rides, and if they show up … Continue reading

Amusement Parks Go High Tech and You Pay the Price

They are the No.1 destination for families. Whether they are located in North America, South Korea or Dubai millions of visitors flock to amusement parks each year. And what a difference a few years can make. Gone are the days when rickety wooden roller coasters took center stage. These days amusement parks are high-tech experiences and guests want to make sure they get their monies worth. (And with admission averaging about $45 per adult it’s not hard to see why.) Modern theme parks make the most of technological advances. For example, the Kingda Ka roller coaster at New Jersey’s Six … Continue reading

High Prices and Preferential Treatment for the Wealthy – Walt Must be Rolling Over!

Walt Disney’s dream was to be able to share the magic of Disney with people of all ages and financial means. In fact, it was very important to him that the hotels and resorts built at Disney World range from the very inexpensive to the upscale for just that purpose. He wanted everyone to be able to enjoy the magic of Disney regardless of their income. Now, Walt Disney World in Florida has raised their admission prices for the third time in less than two years and there is a patent pending on new technology that would allow guests who … Continue reading

Disney’s “Third Shift”

Many visitors refer to Disneyland as the “Happiest Place on Earth” and if you’ve ever been to the theme park you know it is certainly one of the cleanest public places on the planet. But, have you ever wondered how it maintains its tidy reputation? The answer: the “Third Shift.” Not long after the last guest exits the park’s gates “cast members” (yes, even the maintenance crews were deemed such by Walt Disney) arrive to restore order to the Magic Kingdom. According to Disney execs, some 1,000 workers known as “custodians” clock in after midnight to inspect rides and scrub … Continue reading

What NOT To Do At Disney World

Fatigued, impatient, dehydrated Disney guests be warned… having a meltdown at “The Happiest Place on Earth” is not advisable. Just ask an Alabama woman who was recently arrested for beating and kicking a woman she said cut in line at a Walt Disney World attraction. Talk about setting a poor example for children… According to police, 51-year-old Victoria Walker was standing in line for the Mad Tea Party ride with her 11-year-old daughter when she began yelling obscenities at a 35-year-old Florida woman. Walker then reportedly grabbed the younger woman from behind and hit her until fellow Disney guests pulled … Continue reading

Disney World Implementing New Fingerprint Scanner Security

One of the happiest places on Earth is increasing their security by scanning fingerprint information as a part of securing access to the parks. They have used finger geometry (biometrics) information for years in order to prevent the resale or fraud associated with their attraction tickets, but they were just using the shape of your finger as opposed to your fingerprint itself. By the end of this month, however, all of their geometry readers will be replaced with fingerprint scanners. A spokesperson for the Orlando Walt Disney World parks has identified this as a technology upgrade. It’s important to understand … Continue reading
