A Study in Princesses: Pocahontas and Mulan

For the past two weeks I’ve been looking at the Disney Princesses: how they’re presented, how they change with time, and what they say about a woman’s role in society. For all of the princesses up until the mid-1990s, meeting and winning a man (or for Aladdin, a woman) was the fulfillment of their life’s journey. We start to see real change with 1995’s “Pocahontas,” a movie with which I admit I’m not as familiar. But it’s important for several reasons. Pocahontas continues with the recent trend of heroines yearning after lives of adventure, as opposed to waiting for men … Continue reading

Disney World Bridal Studio Upgrade

It seems everything at Walt Disney World is getting a facelift these days. First come plans for a major Fantasyland expansion, and next we hear that popular destination for Disney fan couples Franck’s Bridal Studio has undergone a technological renovation. Stitch Kingdom reports that Disney’s one-stop shop for weddings has added two new planning rooms, updated its furnishings, and most importantly, upgraded its technological capabilities. Before, couples would travel to the Franck’s in person to meet with their wedding planner to iron out all the details on their upcoming Disney-themed nuptials. While it’s still necessary for couples to meet with … Continue reading

5 Great Reasons to Take a Disney Cruise

We’re a huge lover of all things Disney, heck, we were married at Disney, but until recently I never thought of going on a Disney Cruise. Initially, my resistance to the idea of a Disney Cruise was the expense of it versus just going to the parks themselves. After all, as my daughter summed up, Disney World has lots and lots of rides – a cruise has just a boat. Not Just a Boat A Disney Cruise is not just a boat. While the cost may be expensive, there are some great deals out there for 3 day cruises that … Continue reading

The Green Mouse?

I’ve always found Disney to be on the cutting edge of social and technological change. This was the dream of Walt and that dream continues into the 21st century. Conservation has always been a commitment of Disney. In April, the last of Disney’s resorts have come up to the green stardards of the Florida’s Greed Lodging Program. Disney’s Yacht & Beach Club (hey, I was married there in their rose garden in 1999) was the last of the 23 resorts to come up to the green standards. Disney World’s 23 resorts have now all received Florida Department of Environmenal Protection’s … Continue reading

Happy Anniversary – Disney Magic

Wow, I woke up this morning at 4:15 a.m. with a half-formed yelp and a huge sigh of relief. I was dreaming that it was my wedding day again and the woman who did my hair and make-up was there to torture me. I loved getting married and I loved getting married at Disney World, but I started getting ready for the wedding at 4:30 in the morning because they were doing all my bridal pictures at 6 a.m. in the empty Magic Kingdom. Happy Anniversary Today marks 8 years since we tied the knot in Disney World and we’ve … Continue reading

Marriage Laws – Georgia & Florida

Rounding off our journey down the East coast, we come to the states of Georgia and Florida. These are a pair of beautiful states (though I admit a soft spot for Florida because it’s where I was born and where I was married). So let’s take a good look at these beautiful southern states with their rich history and picturesque locations (Disney wedding anyone?)and their marriage laws. Georgia Residents of Georgia need to apply for their marriage license in the county where they reside. You will also need two forms of identification when you apply for your license. In Cobb … Continue reading

Happy Anniversary to Me!

7 years ago today, my husband and I got married in Orlando, Florida. I was at the Magic Kingdom getting my bridal photographs taken in front of Cinderella’s Castle, on her Carousel and in front of Tomorrowland. A few hours later, I was standing outside the Boardwalk resort enjoying the morning sunshine while my bridesmaids were getting their hair and make up done. We had our pictures taken together in the lobby of this beautiful hotel. My bridesmaids, maid of honor and my mother all then left in a limousine to drive over to the Yacht Club and get ready … Continue reading

My Favorite Attractions: Disney World’s Magic Kingdom

I’ve been back to the Magic Kingdom several times over the last 20 or so years. I enjoyed many of the attractions both as a child, a teenager, a young single adult, a newly married wife and on our last trip, a mother of a very eager and excited 4 year old. Over those many visits, I’ve put together a list of ten must see attractions at the Magic Kingdom, which ranks as my favorite of the different theme parks available for visiting during our periodic sojourns to Orlando, Florida. In no particular order, here are my favorite attractions at … Continue reading
